Step 1 — Cleanup EQ (EQ Eight)

Drop EQ Eight on the vocal track first. Enable band 1 as a high-pass filter (12 dB/octave) and sweep it up until the vocal starts to thin out, then back it off slightly — usually 80–100 Hz for most voices, up to 120 Hz for a dense mix. This removes mic rumble, plosive thumps, and low-end buildup that eats headroom.

Next, hunt for mud. Sweep a narrow bell boost between 200–500 Hz, find the frequency that sounds boxy or woolly, then cut it by 2–4 dB with a medium Q. Most home-recorded vocals need a cut somewhere in this range because untreated rooms pile up energy there.

Step 2 — Compression (Compressor)

Ableton's stock Compressor is more capable than its plain interface suggests. Start with a 4:1 ratio, attack around 10 ms, release around 100 ms (or Auto), and pull the threshold down until you see 3–6 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases. Use the Makeup gain to bring the level back up.

Step 3 — De-essing (Multiband Dynamics)

Compression makes sibilance louder — the S, T, and CH sounds that live roughly between 5–9 kHz. Ableton has no dedicated de-esser, but Multiband Dynamics does the job cleanly: disable the low and mid bands, set the high band's crossover around 5.5 kHz, and pull the high band's threshold down until harsh esses trigger 3–6 dB of reduction while normal consonants pass untouched.

Step 4 — Saturation (Saturator)

Saturator adds harmonics that help a vocal cut through a busy mix without extra volume. Choose the Soft Sine curve, set Drive between 2–6 dB, and blend with the Dry/Wet control at 30–50% for parallel warmth. On rap and pop vocals, a touch more drive adds the aggressive, up-front quality you hear on commercial records.

Step 5 — Tone EQ (second EQ Eight)

Now that dynamics are controlled, a second EQ Eight shapes the final tone. Two moves cover most vocals: a wide 1–3 dB presence boost around 3–5 kHz for clarity and articulation, and a high shelf of 1–3 dB from 10 kHz upward for air and expensive-sounding sheen. If the boosts bring back harshness, that's a sign to revisit the de-esser threshold, not to skip the boost.

Steps 6 & 7 — Reverb and Delay

For reverb, less is more on lead vocals. Start with a plate-style setting: pre-delay 20–40 ms (so the dry words stay intelligible), decay 1.2–1.8 seconds, and Dry/Wet at 10–20% when used as an insert. The pre-delay is the secret — it separates the reverb tail from the vocal transient so you get space without distance.

Delay adds depth that reverb can't. A stock Delay set to a dotted-eighth or quarter-note sync, feedback around 20–30%, and Dry/Wet at 10–15% fills gaps between phrases. Roll off the delay's own highs — many mixers low-pass the repeats around 6 kHz — so the echoes sit behind the vocal instead of competing with it.
